Understanding State Supreme Court Elections: Wisconsin & Beyond

  • University of Wisconsin Law School OR Virtually (map)

The 2023 Wisconsin Supreme Court race was the most expensive judicial election in U.S. history, and the upcoming election for an open seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court carries significant implications for decisions on a host of critical issues. This panel event will explore why some states elect justices, how judicial campaigns differ from other state races, especially as it relates to campaign finance, and how Wisconsin’s judicial elections compare to those across the country.

Please join us in-person or virtually for the first event of our Election Matters 2025 series on Friday, March 7 at 3 p.m. central time, hosted by the Elections Research Center and the  State Democracy Research Initiative

The event will take place at the University of Wisconsin Law School room 7200. For those unable to attend in person, please register for the online option to receive the live-stream link and participate in the discussion virtually.

Panelists will include Barry Burden (UW-Madison Political Science), Michael Kang (Northwestern Pritzker School of Law), Quinn Yeargain (Michigan State College of Law), and the panel will be moderated by the State Democracy Research Initiative Director,  Miriam Seifter.
